I’ll discuss my personal experience learning how to use a clipper to cut my hair in this article. I’ll walk you through what worked for me, from my initial reluctance to getting the hang of it. It isn’t as difficult as you might think.
This could give you the courage to grab the clipper and give yourself a new look at home if you’ve ever thought about trying it.

Hairdressers" opinions
What distinguishes a cut made with scissors from one made with a razor? When hair is trimmed with scissors, it appears more uniform and straight, whereas hair cut with a razor appears thinner at the ends.
My personal experience has shown me that this is not the case—the incision is not very thin.
A razor essentially thins out the hair. How strong it is depends on the hand movements of the master. The haircut always fits well, especially when the hair is thick. Almost does not require styling. There is additional volume. But with thin, sparse hair, it is better to cut only with scissors, since such a haircut will not add volume, it will only make it worse. A clear, massive edge with almost no thinning adds volume to sparse hair. Or rather, not volume, but visual mass.
Of the disadvantages of a razor haircut, I can only name that it spoils the hair. Hair is cut on the bias, due to which a large surface of the hair remains open. That is why they split more.
The evil of thinning hair has long been recognized. This quote also conveys a message that is worth holding onto, but more on that later.
A razor haircut looks slightly careless but still stylish and lively. conveys a sense of spontaneity and lightness. For those who are growing their hair, I do not advise getting a razor haircut because the cut caused by a razor leads to splitting. This haircut is appropriate for people who trim their hair frequently and keep it in shape.
Once more, they claim that splitting is a result of the hair being cut erratically.

Thus far, the impression is outstanding! I’m overjoyed! It came out really gorgeous, thick, and jagged! The hair appears more robust and full-bodied! I believe that the ends will look healthy for a very long time if they are given the right care right away after the haircut!
Ha, the exact opposite viewpoint.
The cut was extremely even; the only other similarity I could find was when I cut with hot scissors. The hair appears thick and vibrant at the ends. And they stay that way for a very long time—at least, I didn’t see the cross-section growing!
Indeed, a machine-cut haircut is comparable to one cut with heated scissors. The hair tip is "sealed" in the second instance only, preventing the hair from splitting.
The ends are in good condition and the cut is even after three months. The only thing, though, is that I didn’t experience lightness. It usually feels like a big stone has dropped from my shoulders when they cut with scissors, but in this case, it seemed as though they hadn’t cut at all.
My hair has been free of noticeable split ends for a while. Why not.
What can I say – the hair lay perfectly in terms of shape, but I was left in an unpleasant shock from the condition of the hair, specifically from the ends. My hair is not dyed, and split ends have never been noticed! And here they just went crazy! One split end, another, a third… just keep cutting it off! Not fatal, but a decent amount of split hairs were collected. When I looked at the light, I was surprised by the shape of many of the ends. They were not cut straight, as is usually the case, but rather cut diagonally and unevenly, the top was very pointed and thinning. It is clear that no scissors can do this. But how the rattling attachment of the hair clipper cuts hair (forgive me for the unprofessional terms:) – I have no idea, maybe it goes over the same hair more than once, and from several sides!
This is one of the comments stating that the hair is split, thinned, and cut biassed.
Using a clipper to cut your own hair at home can be an easy and sensible way to keep up your appearance without going to a salon. I’ll share advice, tools, and steps that made the process easier based on my personal experience so you can feel comfortable giving yourself a new haircut at home.
Is it really possible to cut hair "biased" only with a hair clipper
Not in my opinion:
The importance of the technique of performing a haircut
A lot depends on how we will be cut. By HOW I mean: the tilt of the hand, the tilt of the scissors. As you can see from the diagram, this is important, and even scissors can make a straight and oblique cut. So, in the cross-section after a haircut with a machine, you can probably blame your hairdresser"s technique, the sharpness of the machine blades.
By the way, there is a technique for thinning the ends, in which the scissors are held at an angle, the hair is cut "on the bias", because of this we then observe thinning and splitting of the ends. It is very difficult to grow such weak hair. Therefore, take note!

Thus, I was unable to identify any obvious or significant variations in the haircuts. The only things that matter are the blades’ sharpness and technique. So let’s get back to my tale.
Personal experience of cutting with a machine
And now that I’ve finished writing the lengthy post and taking the final pictures with measurements, I pull out the machine and ask my "personal hairdresser" to assist me once more.

My device is a basic Philips QC5010 machine.
Although it doesn’t have many features, the self-sharpening SteelWave blades are a valuable addition:
The newest wave-shaped, self-sharpening blades precisely trim the contour by guiding and cutting the hair.
My boyfriend’s hair cuts evenly and smoothly when I cut it; it doesn’t break or tangle. The blades are sharp as a result.
Someone posts gorgeous hair of their boyfriends, and I post my work By the way, my boyfriend has thick and curly hair, he started to grow it a couple of times, but he doesn"t have enough patience.
Haircut process
I’m used to getting a clean, dry haircut. I therefore wash it as normal and let it air dry before cutting. I decide against using an iron to straighten it because this time the ends don’t protrude. I don’t use leave-in oils on them; the amount of spray you use to make them easier to comb through is limited, and using a natural-bristle comb frequently will eliminate static. I apologize for the repetition.
We start the haircut process once the hair is totally dry!
I was determined to remove 5 centimeters (since.. your motivational posts really encouraged me to do this!). But we decided to act gradually, leveling the cut, and most importantly – not to fanaticism, so as not to cut off more than planned.
In principle, the technique is simple – you comb your hair well so that the ends lie hair to hair, turn on the machine, bring it to the strand, cut. My hairdresser holds his hand exactly parallel to the floor The main thing is that the "guinea pig" does not move, does not breathe, does not think, does not see and certainly does not sneeze! Which is what I actually did. Also for convenience, I put on a T-shirt with stripes. To control the process, we take photos at the same time as the haircut, we see: is it even, and how much more to remove. I also check the quality of the ends with my hands.
We performed the "first stroke," based on which we are now further aligned.
It never looks even after the initial trimming. Proceed.
Looks to be "ideal"!
Once the length is finished, we must update the front strands, which is a more difficult process. I made the following decision to handle this on my own.
We divide the necessary strand—in my case, my growing bangs—and give it a thorough combing.
We use our fingers to firmly clamp the strand before using the machine to cut it "away from us":
With the side strands, we perform the same manipulations: we divide the hair, comb it, align it, clamp the strand, and cut. Next, we examine the quality and evenness of the cut using the same scheme:
Naturally, you will need to adjust it! I fiddled with the front strands for about twenty minutes because they weren’t easy for me! It took a few minutes to even out the main length.

And presto! After the haircut is complete, we get a brand-new, nearly even cut (I use a machine to smooth out the unevenness in the tail):
And flexible, sound conclusions:
The biggest benefit of getting a haircut at home is that they will only cut off the exact amount you require! If not, your "hairdresser" will have to put up with your incessant complaining!
I also dab a tiny bit of leave-in product on the very ends after cutting.
Consequently, we cut off 3 cm, making me 54 cm in length. Well, the hair has obviously grown since March. I’m happy that the caliber stays at this level:
I didn’t feel the hair at all in the initial days following the haircut—as if Kara made! I felt so light-headed that I couldn’t stop touching my hair, wondering if it was in place at all.
A few days later, the tips are obviously "new" even though they are still leading icicles astray:
A couple of weeks later
It’s evident that the cut is still "fresh." He is likewise elastic based on tactile perceptions. The brittleness, the cutter, and the tangled hair all disappeared. The most important thing right now is to preserve the outcome.
Step | Details |
Preparation | I set up the hair clipper, ensured it was charged, and gathered a mirror and a comb to assist with the process. |
Start with longer guards | To avoid mistakes, I began with the longest guard attachment and gradually worked my way to shorter ones. |
Back and sides first | I clipped the hair on the back and sides first, moving the clipper upwards for an even cut. |
Top last | For the top, I used a slightly longer guard and trimmed evenly while blending it into the sides. |
Finishing touches | After cutting, I checked for any uneven spots, tidied the edges, and cleaned up any stray hairs. |
Using a clipper to cut your own hair at home may seem daunting at first, but it gets much simpler with practice. All you need to do is take your time, use the appropriate resources, and figure out what suits you the best.
I developed a regimen that works for me after experimenting and trying various approaches, which has given me the self-assurance to handle routine trims. It’s also a great way to avoid going to the barber and save money.
If you’re considering giving it a try, don’t be scared to make errors at first. You’ll get better with time, so soon it will seem like just another part of your daily self-care regimen.
