At first I hated it, and then I fell in love with it – His Majesty Refresh for curly hair

Having curly hair can be quite the journey. It appears flawless on some days and seems to have a mind of its own on others. Many people who have curls find that taking care of their hair is an ongoing struggle. It’s common for products that promise defined, smooth curls to fall short, and this can lead to frustration.

I had the exact same reaction the first time I used the Refresh product. I detested it at first. My curls felt heavier, more rigid, and friskier than they had been. I was perplexed as to how something intended to revive my hair could make it appear worse.

However, after some perseverance and experimentation, an incredible thing occurred. I started to realize the true potential of Refresh. Rather than giving up, I experimented with various methods, and my curls gradually changed. I can’t fathom my daily routine without it now.

Stage Feelings
Trying refresh for the first time I hated it, my curls felt heavy and sticky
Getting used to the routine Still skeptical, but noticing some definition
Seeing results after a few tries My curls started looking bouncier and more defined
Making refresh a habit I fell in love with how it revives my curls and saves time

What is refresh

In Russian, it means "refreshment" or "restoration of curls," to put it literally. Why is it necessary? Since curls are rather brittle, they may lose their lovely appearance—fluff up, stretch, or straighten—the second or third day after washing your hair. You have to redo your styling in order to return them.

Between the first and third or fourth days after washing, my hair looks noticeably different. Naturally, I try to preserve my hairstyle for as long as possible. I wear an artificial silk scarf, sleep on a silk pillowcase, and sleep with my hair in a pineapple secured with a silk elastic band.

My hair is fairly long and not particularly curly; the "hat zone" is the only area that curls well. The lower part of my hair hardly ever curls. This explains why curls that are subjected to gravity’s pull are severely stretched and transform into waves. It works for me, so I don’t often use refreshing. Nevertheless, I still enjoy doing it in spite of this.

How I do refreshing

My hair typically loses its clear, elastic curl by the third or fourth day and resembles this:

Even in this form, I really like my curls, and if I went to work that day, I would not do anything. I would have gathered some of my hair with a crab at the back of my head in a malvinka and would have been happy.

However, I have today off. I’ll therefore do a quick refresh.

In addition, on gif hair following the following maintenance:

  • As a pre- maskGarnier fructis Superfood with pineapple– pushka-bomb – the aroma is awesome, remained after all other products! Hair is combed perfectly! In general, I liked it;
  • Vieso argan shampoo;
  • Vieso mask with perilla (how I missed it);
  • Vieso argan ampoule mixed with a mask with perilla to length;
  • Vieso argan conditioner;
  • Vieso honey cream;
  • Vieso argan spray;
  • Taft gel;
  • So go foam.

I’m going back to cleaning without silicone and reserving the leftover products for special occasions.

Back to refresh now.

I start by gently arranging my hair with my hands to reduce the amount of tangled sections. Thankfully, my hair stays out of tangles even with the winter, hats, scarves, turtlenecks, jackets, and scarves. This is exactly what I would call merit-based care.

The next step is to completely wet your hair; if a spray bottle is more convenient, use it instead of tap water. This is not at all significant.

Furthermore, it’s crucial to avoid touching the basic zone and to back off by roughly 5 centimeters from the scalp. Only moisturize the longer hair! Next, using the app "Hands of the Prayer," I run my hands through my hair in an attempt to equally distribute moisture throughout its length and mass. As it happens, I sort of smooth, untangle, and straighten the curls to get them ready for the next step.

I’m sorry; I’m not much of a "apirator," as my hair seems to be done behind the scenes.

The next step is to apply the living; for me, that means using a primer from Curl Rock and Roll. Living is extremely liquid in consistency, spreading over hair with ease and not at all sticky. The primer moisturizes the hair, and the proteins curl the hair because they contain moisturizing ingredients. There’s a tiny obsession. I occasionally use the primer by itself.

Since the primer is quite liquid, I apply it liberally and top up as needed. Using the "praying hands" method once more, I distribute the product throughout the hair before "squeezing" it in.

You can already see that the hair is starting to "jump" and curl at this point. I thus give my hair a really quick squeeze for a minute or two. I appreciate that the primer is not sticky at all, allowing for beautifully formed and outlined curls. I’ll use styling this time to increase fixation.

Putting mousse on is the next step.

The gif illustrates how beautifully damp hair starts to curl, indicating that the styling will look stunning.

Using the "hands of a praying person," I take a generous amount of mousse Noah for your natural beauty and spread it evenly throughout your hair before squeezing it in.

I’m happy when the curls grow into big, plump curls. It took me four minutes and a bit total.

We now let the hair air dry. A hair dryer with a diffuser can be used in minimum mode and at the coldest temperature possible. I like the natural process better in this instance.

It takes roughly 30 minutes for drying. A cast is created because styling was applied. Since the hair is soft and elastic after the primer, there is typically no solo cast.

Since I’ve been using protein foams lately and Noah mousse doesn’t contain any, I now add styling to the refresh in addition to its perfect hydration and lightest cast, which breaks up nicely. For me, it works well for refreshing in general.

This image shows dried hair wearing a cast. We’ve already had an exceptionally warm December; you can walk around without a hat because it’s up to 15 degrees during the day. I don’t mind the effect of wet hair at all. It is extremely hot.

You will have a different-looking hairstyle if you break the cast. I normally use oil for these kinds of purposes. Alternatively, you can use Vieso ampoules, a scarf or silk towel, or just your hands to break the crust.

I used liquid crystals from Insight today; these are another silicone-containing product that I would like to get rid of as soon as possible. However, I was always thrilled with liquid crystals, unlike Alfaparf oil, which wildly electrified my hair and, to my nose, smelled disgustingly of some cheap men’s shaving foam (may the fans of this oil and classic men’s fragrances pardon me).

The typical Insight scent is spicy-vanilla, slightly tart, extremely soft, and doesn’t cling to hair. This is how Insight oil smells. They appear to have good smoothing properties and a thermal protection feature. Overall, I thought they were good, but since they contain silicones and don’t require oil leave-in products, I won’t be doing them again.

Using the same bottom-up squeezing motions, we break the crust from the styling. We can expect supple and flexible curls beneath the cast.

Most likely, that is all. My efforts took literally 5–6 minutes, not counting the time it takes to dry, as you can use that time to do other things.

A significant change can occasionally be unsettling, particularly if it involves a new haircut or curly hair treatment. When you first use the refresh technique, your curls may not look the way you’re used to. But as you get to know it and accept its advantages, you’ll begin to notice that it brings out the best in your natural texture, leaving your curls looking more defined, bouncy, and healthy. What used to seem like a hassle turns into a necessary component of your hair care regimen, and you find it impossible to abandon.

Examples

Naturally, I didn’t realize this right away. When I first used the gel for these purposes, I experienced a number of blatantly unsuccessful refreshes.

It was just gross—standing, wooden hair that was uncomfortable to touch.

I even stopped experimenting for a while after unsuccessful refreshes; instead, I started to just lightly beat my hair and spray Vieso’s ylang-ylang spray on it. Naturally, this isn’t a traditional styling refresh; however, the hair looked better on the third day following this kind of manipulation.

This spray gave curls some texture and definition.

I also can’t resist bringing up the revamp using an even more effective combination of Taft foam and Cocochoco Intensive cream mask. I was genuinely taken aback by the outcome.

The steps are the same, but the cream mask is thicker and I mixed it with water to apply and distribute it more evenly throughout the hair. The outcome was satisfactory.

After it naturally dried, I simply broke the cast with my hands due to a lack of oil.

It can be risky to try new things with curly hair because of its unpredictable nature. When a product or technique doesn’t work right away, it’s common to become frustrated. But sometimes, the very thing we detest can end up being exactly what we require.

Refresh routines are one such instance. When curls behave badly, it can feel like an extra hassle at first, or even like a failure. Refreshing curls, however, can actually bring out their best look without having to start from scratch if you have the right products and patience.

A necessary part of the journey is learning to love your curls with all of their flaws. A decent refresh technique gives you that daily confidence boost by preserving the beauty and bounce of your curls.
