Taming frizz. Making curls without frizz

One of the most annoying obstacles to smooth, well-defined curls can be frizzy hair. The good news is that it is totally possible to tame frizz and achieve gorgeous curls without the mess if you use the right techniques.

You can keep the frizz at bay and still make your curls stand out by using specific styling techniques and the appropriate products. You can have smooth, bouncy curls that last all day with a little extra care.

Whether you use tools to create curls or have naturally curly hair, understanding how to manage frizz can make a big difference. Let’s examine the best techniques for effortlessly getting curls free of frizz.

Method Description
Use a Leave-In Conditioner Apply a leave-in conditioner to damp hair to help smooth and control frizz. It also provides extra moisture, which can help prevent frizz.
Apply Anti-Frizz Serum Anti-frizz serums coat the hair and help to control flyaways and frizz. Apply a small amount to damp hair before styling.
Use a Diffuser When drying your curls, use a diffuser attachment on your hairdryer. It helps to dry curls evenly and reduces frizz by minimizing direct heat exposure.
Avoid Over-Washing Washing your hair too frequently can strip it of natural oils, leading to frizz. Try to wash your hair less often and use a gentle, moisturizing shampoo.
Dry Hair Gently Instead of rubbing your hair with a towel, gently pat it dry to reduce frizz. You can also use a microfiber towel or an old T-shirt for best results.
Use a Wide-Tooth Comb After washing, use a wide-tooth comb to detangle your hair. This reduces breakage and helps to maintain curl definition without frizz.

What is livin and what is it for

First, let’s identify the kind of beast you are living with. With them, everything is transparent. There is shampoo, balm, mask, and even oil for the ends of the hair. What use does this one serve?

The name "livin" comes from the English phrase "leave in" or "allow something to remain inside."

It’s basically the same cream, milk, fluid, or spray—that is, a product that lets you seal in moisture and, crucially for the curly method, form a protective layer before applying styling gel and blow-drying.

  • You can choose a cream for straight hair and use it as a livin (but you need to look very carefully at the composition, most often such products contain silicones, which are not recommended for use in the curly method);
  • You can not completely rinse out the conditioner, then it will also serve as a "protective layer";
  • Or choose a suitable livin among curly brands, or curly lines.

The final point appears to be the simplest. You visit the online store, select a particular area, and within a few days (or months, if it is shipped from overseas), you are enjoying curls that are devoid of fluff—but it wasn’t there. The trend of making "curly jars" inspired well-known and hip brands (like CHI and Davines) to create their own lines of products specifically for curly hair, nearly all of which contain silicone. Additionally, "curly classics" like Deva curl instantly re-nourish my light waves without weighing them down.

Leave-in conditioner with the smell of blooming cotton

This is the main reason I prefer to purchase goods from local brands, whether they are for my skin or hair. They are more likely to fit me because they are more aware of my hair type and share a similar climate.

  • Volume: 250 ml.
  • Price: 980 rubles
  • Consumption: very economical
  • Buy: on marketplaces, in the brand"s salons

Who is this leave-in conditioner beneficial for?

I’ll take this opportunity to engage in a brief argument with the creators. If your curls are not too dry, a leave-in conditioner will also help; it will "steal" a little volume, but it will also make the waves and curls more defined and less frizzy. Additionally, it will prevent splitting and dryness in the ends over time.

It is also suitable for straight hair that requires protection from a hair dryer and softness. The conditioner is well-balanced and leaves the hair feeling light.

The only visual difference between the bottle and the leave-in conditioner is the sticker’s illustration. Other than that, it has the same thick, dark plastic, bright stickers, readable fonts, and a pump dispenser.

Composition:

Water, Cetearyl Alcohol, Guar Hydroxypropyltrimonium Chloride, Glycerin, Water, Extract from Oryza Sativa (rice), Saccharomyces Ferment Lysate Filtrate, Citric Acid, Sodium Benzoate, Potassium Sorbate, Panthenol, Lactic Acid, Dehydroacetic Acid, Parfum, and Sodium Hydroxide

It’s white, not overly thick, and devoid of mother-of-pearl or glitter. Inhale… The conditioner smells light and fresh, like herbal lozenges, though I’m not sure what blooming cotton smells like. The scent disappears from the hair and is quite subtle.

Using the appropriate methods and products is key to taming frizz and producing defined, sleek curls. Managing frizz in hair, whether it’s naturally curly or straight, begins with good hair care practices like using moisturizing shampoos, conditioners, and heat protectants. Achieving gorgeous, frizz-free curls can also be facilitated by utilizing diffusers, avoiding high heat, and selecting the appropriate curling tools.

Application

What the manufacturer recommends:

First method: Apply right away after washing out your regular conditioner to very wet, clean hair. Don’t rinse. On top, apply your usual styling gel or foam. Expel and allow to dry. Second method: Use your hands to smooth out the curls and apply a small amount of leave-in conditioner to tame fluff in the morning. Some curl enthusiasts use a spray bottle to combine leave-in conditioner and gel, which they use in the morning to revive their style.

How I do it

  1. After shampoo and conditioner, I squeeze my hair a little with my hands so that water does not drip from them at all, but at the same time they are wet enough;
  2. I rub the conditioner between my palms, warming it up, I take a very small portion, the size of a bean. It becomes sticky (it feels like a greasy hand cream with wax in it) see. below;
  3. I apply it to my hair immediately with squeezing movements (if I want curls) or smooth it out (if I want straight hair); at this stage, the curls are already trying to "jump";
  4. I squeeze until there is less water;
  5. I apply styling;
  6. Then I either do plopping, or take a towel and continue to "squeeze" with it, trying to remove as much water as possible so that the curls do not stretch;
  7. I dry my hair with a hairdryer and a diffuser.

Refresh

Using a leave-in conditioner for refresh didn’t appeal to me.

Hi, overdone: my hair appeared lifeless, was covered in tangles, and had a foreign movie vibe to it. Even though it didn’t appear dirty, I still felt the need to wash my hair.

Spray

However, Livin proved to be a really nice guy as a spray. I shook vigorously after adding a tiny bit of conditioner to filtered water. The spray blended evenly and sediment-free. It proved to be odorless and extremely light.

How it works: a tiny bottle that fits in any bag, it softens hair wonderfully, gets rid of frizz, and saves me on the road.

It is very beneficial for detangling hair without making it heavy and for adding moisture. It appears that it will be my constant friend throughout the summer.

With the appropriate methods and products, it is possible to achieve curls free of frizz. You can maintain the smoothness and definition of your curls by properly prepping your hair and using gentle methods.

To lock in hydration, it’s critical to concentrate on moisture and use anti-frizz products. Avoiding harsh tools and using heat protection will also help you keep your curl pattern intact without causing damage.

Your hair can be styled to look polished and healthy with perfectly tamed curls free of frizz if you have a little patience and follow the proper care instructions.
