Eyebrow fashion: then-now
In Ancient Times
The way people treated their eyebrows varied depending on the culture: in Ancient Egypt, bright eyebrows and makeup were a sign of devotion to the gods, and people believed that makeup could ward off illness and bad luck; in Ancient Greece, bright eyebrows were frowned upon and unmarried girls were discouraged from coloring them; in Ancient Persia, a unibrow was thought to be particularly attractive; in Ancient Japan, on the other hand, eyebrows were shaved, bleached, and bright black arches were drawn high on the forehead.
Middle Ages and Renaissance
When it came to beauty, having a high forehead and no eyebrows was considered ideal. Eyebrows were either threadbare or entirely shaved.

Victorian era – 19th century
Women wore their eyebrows naturally, did very little with them, and found them fashionable.

20th century
At this point, the "let your soul roam" era started, and brow trends started to shift with each passing decade. As the film industry reached its peak, actresses started to set trends. Drama took the place of natureelle (20s years) Arched eyebrows first surfaced as a detail in the image of a deadly seductress in the 1930s. Additionally, decorative cosmetics are starting to be sold. Women are beginning to appear dramatic.

The density reappears in the 1940s and 1950s; initially, there isn’t time to do eyebrows; Grace Kelly, who had the most naturally occurring pointed-tip eyebrows at the time, was the style icon; later, new icons with thick, curved eyebrows, like Audrey Hepburn and Marilyn Monroe, emerge.

60-70 — the emphasis shifts from eyebrows to eyes, avant-garde makeup becomes fashionable. Smooth curved eyebrows give way to thread-shaped eyebrows, and a little later a new trend appears — a comma-shaped eyebrow.

Natural fluff and thick, wide eyebrows are back in style in the 1980s. Even at that time, fashionistas used specialized gels to give their eyebrows the maximum amount of fluff.
Madness reigned in the 1990s and the early 2000s. The most common trend at the time was to pluck eyebrows in any way possible: in a house, as threads (I had exactly these eyebrows), and in commas. And then there it is: body art. Fashionistas and beauty queens of all ages settle into a chair at the beautician’s and are willing to put up with discomfort for years in order to have gorgeous, vibrant eyebrows.

The present and the end of the 2000s Natural eyebrows that are thick and naturally curved are back in style. The art of tattooing is evolving; it’s becoming microblading, powder technique, and other hip terms. It remains essentially the same tattoo. The rise of Instagram gives rise to the trendy "Instabrow," which is eyebrow makeup with the highest level of clarity and most precisely drawn hairs that looks stunning in macro shots. Brow artists are independent experts in the coloring and shaping of eyebrows. (Previously, cosmetologists handled everything.)

As you can see, trends in fashion are cyclical and always follow one another before resurfacing. In my younger years, I also used commas and strings; to be honest, I don’t remember this as much as I would like to. However, fashion is fashion. I now have softly curved, moderately thick eyebrows, and I doubt I’ll follow the fashion trend if threads become fashionable once more. Naturalness and naturalness will always look stylish, in my opinion.
Types of eyebrows and types of hair structure
What was it that you desired? Not just the hair on the head has a unique structure and thickness. My eyebrows, for instance, are thin and soft on the head but have a lot of thick hair that sticks out. The harder the brow hair, the more challenging it is to work with in terms of shape and color as well as plucking.
Hairs can be:
- hard/soft
- natural/gray
- thin/thick
- growing up/growing down
- thick/sparse
Form Though each eyebrow is initially distinct, Slavic eyebrows are essentially soft bends with a medium thickness. From birth, this is what we are given. And that’s when women start experimenting, usually when they’re still in their teens. They remove the excess, either on purpose or as a nod to current fashion trends. Using the first available black pencil, they complete their drawing. They use manicure scissors to cut hair that appears excessively long. This is based on my own experience rather than just conjecture! I’ve made such terrible mistakes. Tell people about your experiments; they will be interesting.
In general, we cut the shape as best we can, and it is unlikely that an adult woman will be able to remember what her original eyebrow shape was without referring to childhood photos.
The best is the enemy of the good. By changing the shape of the eyebrow, you completely change your face. Try to not radically change the natural shape and width/thickness of the eyebrow. This is often striking, makes the image disharmonious, and can simply look sloppy.
It is better to slightly correct what we have.
There are a great many shapes – the table lists the main characteristics of the shapes. It is advisable to strive for the most harmonious option, slightly adjusting it to your facial features.
Enhancing your facial features with well-groomed eyebrows is essential, but getting the right shape, thickness, and grooming methods requires knowledge of eyebrow anatomy. The process involves small but crucial details, such as mastering the tools for maintenance and learning how to balance them with your face shape. Anyone can achieve naturally-looking, beautifully shaped brows that accentuate their beauty with the appropriate technique.
Eyebrow shaping. Technique and secrets
This is where things get really interesting. How can I get those flawless eyebrows? The first step is shaping, which involves shaving off extra hair to create the desired shape. The simplest solution is to get in touch with an expert who can design a shape that works for your face type and then help you maintain it. However, if this isn’t feasible for some reason, I can offer some guidance on how to complete this process as quickly and effectively as possible on your own.
- Soberly assess what you have – the shape of the eyebrows and the structure of the hairs.
- Choose the shape we need (preferably, as close as possible to the current one). We will make a small adjustment to this particular shape. As I already advised above, try not to experiment with the shape radically the first time. I do not advise completely changing the shape yourself, without getting the hang of it.
- Before removing unnecessary hair, you can do your eyebrow makeup to see how the chosen shape will look on you and which hairs stand out from the overall picture, or outline the shape with a light eye pencil (so that the hairs are visible on it). There are special stencils for eyebrows, if you are really bad at drawing and are afraid to start. I have not used them, so I will not share my personal experience.
Here, too, there are rules.
Be sure to treat the tweezers and the skin itself before use. I use alcohol, you can use chlorhexidine.
Pluck hairs only in the direction of hair growth, otherwise you can damage the bulb and the hair will start growing in a different direction.
Do not forget to remove light hairs around the tail, and hairs on the bridge of the nose.
I also correct the upper border. I know that many brow artists do not recommend this, but I have very wide eyebrows by nature, so I do it this way. If you are not sure that you will not pinch too much, it is better not to touch the hairs along the upper border, otherwise you can pluck huge holes and the eyebrows will “fall”
It is better to under-pluck than to over-pluck. Don’t strive for an imaginary Instagram ideal. Maybe such an eyebrow looks cool in a macro, but in life such an image will be perceived as “made”. I am for naturalness.
After using henna or paint, you can erase the most noticeable areas and make any necessary corrections in close proximity to the eyebrow’s natural contour, making unnecessary areas more noticeable.
In order to avoid having to create the shape again later, it is preferable to trim any extra hair that grows after creating a new shape once every few days. I use tweezers every three to five days because of my rapid growth.
Overly rounded brows will make you appear surprised. An excessively steep break will appear hostile and irrational. An excessively negative tip will increase melancholy and hopelessness.
The most harmonious on absolutely all types of faces are eyebrows of medium width with a soft bend and a straight axis.
I won’t tell you today how to use your eyebrows to change a person’s face shape, eye placement, forehead height, or other unique features. It’s quite lengthy and challenging. Already, this raises the bar for eyebrow makers. We have the essentials today. As a result, everything I’ve said here relates to creating a traditional shape with a gentle bend, like the models you just saw in the picture.
Many of us probably recall the eyebrow design scheme from old magazines or books, where you had to start by drawing a pencil line on the nose wing to mark the beginning of the eyebrow, then draw an imaginary line through the pupil’s center to mark the highest point, and finally finish by drawing the pencil line to the outer corner of the eye. This is a 20th-century eyebrow design and makeup scheme that has been outdated. In order to achieve the most natural-looking eyebrows possible, it was altered. Sadly, I was unable to locate any publicly accessible comparison images of the 20th and 21st century schemes, so I will have to explain it with my fingers.
The scheme for modern eyebrow design looks like this
- Axis A defines the beginning of the eyebrow and is drawn from the edge of the nostril upwards
- Axis B is parallel to axis A, passes through the outer iris of the eye
- Axis C defines the end of the eyebrow and is drawn from the wing of the nose to the temple
- Axis D is the axis of the eyebrow itself. The base and tail should be at the same level. The most common mistake is just tilting the tail up or down relative to the axis.
We plucked, we plucked, our fingers are tired
I was trying to divert your attention. If you find yourself overwhelmed by the amount of information, it is recommended that you take a brief break to prevent mental confusion and facilitate the assimilation of additional theory and practice.
Tattooing – my opinion
Girls, dear, I beg you, if you decide to take such a step as permanent makeup (tattooing) – weigh all the pros and cons several times!
I explain why. Tattooing is forever! Forever! That is, if you started doing it, then there is no way back – you will have to maintain it constantly, once every few years, again and again going through this procedure.
Tattooing will certainly lose pigment over time and your eyebrows will start to turn blue. If you suddenly do not want to do the next procedure (did not like it, laziness, no money), then you will have to paint over the bluish old tattoo constantly, and without makeup it will look, to put it mildly, not very good and add age. Depending on the technique and materials used, a different amount and saturation of this very blue will appear. In my experience, I have worked with a large number of women who have old tattoos and painting over this is a real hassle.
And you can also just be unlucky – even a master with a golden reputation can be "out of sorts" and do it differently than he usually does in his usual mood. This is very, very risky.
Personal example
My mother got tattooed three times and I constantly tried to dissuade her. Although, she still had reasons – because of constant plucking, her eyebrows practically stopped growing more than "threads". But I was still against it. Needless to say, they didn"t listen to me and my eyebrows were left with "horns and legs"? The technique was always different and reviews about the masters were studied thoroughly, and the work was good the third time, even I was surprised that it was so good. But, a year later, everything went bad again. I"m glad that they finally heard me and don"t plan to do it anymore. But the consequences remained for life – an indelible gray-blue-violet pigment and a small scar. Now you can"t go anywhere without makeup.
Examples of pigment fading under the spoiler
Everyone has their own problems, of course, but if I want to wake up "with eyebrows," I’d rather regularly touch up my henna than suffer from a headache like that for the rest of my life. I have never gotten a tattoo of any kind.
The same permanent makeup is used in microblading, powder technique, and other forms (that is, driving paint under the skin). The only difference is in the work process. The results are the same in terms of paint fading.
Dyeing — what, when, how?
My preferred section. We declined to get tattoos, and I’m too lazy to paint my eyebrows every day. I already have a lovely shape. What location is the exit? And depart with colored eyebrows! Three different kinds of coloring exist:
- chemical dye
- henna
- lamination
Chemical coloring
my choice and love is henna
Its advantages over chemical dyes are obvious:
- lasts much longer on the skin
- thickens the hairs, eyebrows visually look thicker, even when the henna comes off the skin
- does not have an unpleasant chemical smell
I think there is no need to tell lovers of henna hair dyeing about the advantages of henna. You can easily add to my list yourself
myself
What advantages of eyebrow coloring with henna have I identified for myself during this time:
I have almost completely given up eyebrow makeup, even if I do bright eye makeup, my eyebrows do not look scanty against their background. I only touch up my eyebrows with cosmetics if I have very dark makeup or for a photo shoot, because.. in professional photos everything looks paler than in real life.
I began to wake up "with eyebrows" and save time on makeup
my hairs became thicker and when the paint comes off the skin, some semblance of eyebrows remains in place.
the pigment accumulated and my naturally light brown eyebrows became darker and more suitable for the color of my hair
well, the cherry on the cake – eyebrows correctly dyed with henna look much more natural than those dyed with any cosmetics
How to properly dye eyebrows with henna?
First, you need to prepare the skin for the procedure – it is advisable not to do heavy moisturizing and/or nourishing masks a couple of days before.
I don’t apply peelings/scrubs to the eyebrow area, but if you use them in this area, Also try not to do them immediately before the procedure, so as not to get stains.
The day before the procedure, it would also be a good idea to do an allergy test if you are dyeing your eyebrows for the first time. To do this, apply the prepared mixture to the elbow for a couple of hours, then wash it off. If there is no redness or itching, then the mixture is suitable.
For the procedure itself, we will need:
- Cleanser – to degrease the skin and hairs before the procedure. You can use alcohol / alcohol lotions without oils. If you don’t have any of these, micellar water will do, but after using it, the pigment may not stick as well
- Tweezers
- A shot glass for preparing the solution, I bought a tiny one in an online store of manicure accessories. Any small container will do
- A spatula for mixing the mixture. I have an orange stick
- Angled brush
- Henna. I take ready-made mixtures for eyebrows, I have not experimented with pure henna. I have Brown Henna in shade No. 2 Brown. Do not choose a shade much darker than your own. Ideally, the color of the eyebrows should be half a tone lighter or darker than the color of the hair.
- Test swabs
- Cotton pads
- Mirror
- Eyebrow brush (you can use an old mascara brush)
Stages of eyebrow coloring with henna
- Wash off makeup, if it was applied, thoroughly degrease the eyebrows with a cleanser. The cleanser should get on both the hairs and the skin underneath them, so do this carefully, and not just wave a cotton pad a couple of times.
- Comb the eyebrows in the direction of growth with a brush. Wait until the hairs are completely dry (at this time, you can make a correction or prepare a mixture)
- Prepare the mixture: pour a little henna powder and pour in a few drops of water at room temperature, mix thoroughly. Choose the desired proportion of water and powder, you should get the consistency of liquid sour cream. Stir until uniform consistency. Wait about three minutes until the granules are completely dissolved.
- Dip the brush in the mixture and make a few test strokes on your hand – the mixture should lie flat, without bald spots and not be too watery, otherwise it will be difficult to apply to the eyebrows. If there is not enough powder, add more to the desired consistency.
- Apply the composition to the eyebrows, starting from the middle – not from the base, this is important!
With the first layer, we paint the middle and the tip according to the shape we chose when shaping. You can also, as during shaping, make markings with a pencil. With a semi-dry brush, on which a little mixture remains after shaping the tip (this is important), we paint the base, drawing the missing hairs with a light (!) movement of the hand. When drawing the base, hold the brush by the tip, when drawing the body of the eyebrow by the center and only for drawing the tail – at the base of the brush. Such a change in the grip of the brush changes the force of pressure on it and the brightness of the resulting line – you can use this life hack and in makeup
We only paint the base and tail on the second and third layers. To the tail, you can add a few more layers. Consequently, a gradient from a light base to a dark tail ought to appear. It was successful? It indicates that all was done appropriately.
Here"s what I got:
Lamination is the third kind of coloring. Although I am not familiar with the process firsthand, I can explain the technology. I am aware of its large fan base already. Here, a composition that smoothes and envelops each hair is also applied to the brows. It can be transparent or contain pigment. Following the procedure, the eyebrows are typically covered in a keratin composition. The impact lasts approximately one month. Unsuitable for hair that is sparse. does not entirely hide a tattoo that is fading. Very costly in terms of money.
Eyebrow care after coloring
If you take good care of your colored eyebrows, you’ll be happy with their brightness for two weeks!
To do this, you need to follow simple rules:
- Do not touch the eyebrows for 24 hours after coloring, try not to wet them for 12-24 hours, do not apply masks and makeup.
- Do not touch / do not scratch with your hands – here everything is the same as with hair, eyebrows also need to be weaned off touching, if such a habit exists.
- Do not use makeup on the eyebrow area. Application of makeup and its subsequent removal of oils, micellards, two -phases reduces the service life of the pigment on the skin.
- Try not to apply masks to the eyebrow area – they also accelerate the leaching of the pigment from the skin.
On the skin
Don’t compromise on the process and carry it out no sooner than two weeks afterward.
Aspect | Description |
Shape | The ideal eyebrow shape depends on your face type. A soft arch suits round faces, while an angled brow complements square faces. |
Thickness | Thicker eyebrows give a more natural look, while thinner brows offer a more polished appearance. |
Color | Eyebrow color should be one or two shades lighter or darker than your hair to create balance. |
Tools | Use tweezers for precise shaping and a brow pencil to fill in sparse areas. |
Maintenance | Regular trimming and plucking keep your brows neat, but avoid over-plucking to maintain fullness. |
It takes a combination of knowing your natural shape, using the right tools, and regular maintenance to get the perfect brows. It’s more important to find what fits your face shape than to follow trends.
The idea is to bring out the natural beauty of your brows without going overboard, regardless of how thick or thin you like them. Little changes can have a significant effect on how you appear overall.
Recall that patience is crucial. It might take some time to find the right products and let your brows grow out, but the results will be well worth the wait.
