Kinky-Curly and DevaCurl, or curl castings

Although curly hair has a certain beauty all its own, it is not without its difficulties. It can be difficult to find the right products to accentuate those curls. Specialty companies like Kinky-Curly and DevaCurl, which provide products that accentuate natural curls without adding frizz, can help with that.

Loyal followings have grown up around Kinky-Curly and DevaCurl among people with all kinds of curls, from tight coils to loose waves. Their product lines are made to give curls bounce and shine without making them heavier. They are meant to define and hold curls.

This post will examine these brands’ operations, unique selling points, and product recommendations for various curl types. This guide will assist you in navigating the world of curl casting for that flawless, frizz-free finish, whether you’re new to the world of curly hair or looking to switch things up.

Kinky-Curly

Unfortunately, this brand is not as well-known on our website as it is in the English-speaking curly community. It was by coincidence that I met him, and in gratitude to Yulia Jevil, I will tell you more about this brand.

About Kinky-Curly brand

The company was established in 2003 by Shelley Davis, the owner of Afrokudryushki, in the United States.

During a summer vacation to his native Saint-Vincent and the Grenadines, Shelley misplaced her cosmetics-filled suitcase. Shelley asked a local for assistance after not finding her usual hair products in a store on a small island. The resident mixed aloe and plant roots and helped Shelley wash and lay her hair. After returning to the United States, Shelley considered developing cosmetics for curly hair using natural plant ingredients because the results exceeded all expectations.

Included in Kinky-Curly:

  • no oil and oil products;
  • no silicones;
  • no plastics;
  • no mineral oil;
  • No carbomer;
  • no acrylic;
  • No alcohols;
  • no wax;
  • There are no parabens.

The Kinky-Curly TM line of hair products is made to protect against environmental damage, add elasticity to curls without drying them out, and moisturize hair while retaining moisture within it.

"Cleanse – Condition – Style" is the three-step scheme that the manufacturer suggests trying. 1. Knot Today Detangler Conditioner; 2. Come Clean Moisturizing Shampoo; 3. Curling Custard Styling Gel.

“Let your curls dry naturally. Do not touch your curls while they are drying, as this can cause frizz.”

So-called casts are how I got my hands on these three Kinky-Curly products.

Kinky-Curly – Come Clean Natural Moisturizing Shampoo

"It’s critical to rid your hair of any product accumulation. Wax, silicones, oils, butters, and waxes create a thin layer on the hair shaft and ought to be thoroughly cleaned off. White film or flakes may result from product buildup or residues.

Country of origin: USA.

Price/volume:

The original packaging costs about 950 pesos and holds 8 ounces (236 milliliters).

Manufacturer"s promises:

Phytic acid, a naturally occurring chelating agent that eliminates hard water minerals like calcium and magnesium, is a part of the updated formula. It’s an all-natural EDTA substitute made of soy and corn that will prevent and soften hard water build-up in your hair.

While seaweed helps to maintain the right moisture balance, our special blend of mandarin extract will gently cleanse your hair and scalp. This shampoo without sulfates is perfect for damaged, dry hair and is mild enough to use on a daily basis.

Ingredients:

Purified water, organic mandarin orange fruit, organic marigold flower, organic white willow bark, organic sea kelp, c14-16 olefin, sulfonate and cocamidopropyl betaine (coconut derived), phytic acid, citric acid, sea salt, phenoxyethanol, natural fragrance.

The shampoo has a yellowish tint, is transparent, extremely liquid, and has a tendency to run out of your hand (at least that’s what happened to me when I used it for the first time). Because of this, you must use application carefully to avoid excessive consumption. The strong lemon scent doesn’t cling to the hair, but it is pleasantly refreshing.

There’s no need to wash the scalp twice because the shampoo lathers well and leaves it feeling wonderfully clean after just one wash. The shampoo isn’t soft, but it’s also not overly firm. I can liken its washing capabilities to those of solid Shampoo Bar shampoo. The roots’ curl is elastic and alive. There was no itching from the shampoo.

Kinky-Curly — Knot Today Detangler Conditioner

Use a wide-tooth comb to thoroughly comb through hair after applying a generous amount of conditioner until the hair is completely saturated. Tight curls should be left on the hair; do not rinse them off. Soft curls should be rinsed with a little conditioner left on the ends.

Country of origin: USA.

Price/volume:

The original packaging weighs about 8 ounces (236 milliliters) and costs about 900 rubles.

Manufacturer"s promises:

With thick, curly hair, Knot Today is a creamy herbal conditioner and detangler that smoothes the cuticle and gets rid of knots and tangles.

Apply a generous amount of Knot Today to your hair after washing it, and use a wide comb to target problem areas. Can be used to care for thick, curly hair or as a regular way to rinse wavy hair. Great product to use following the removal of extensions and braids.

The conditioner has a pleasant, fruity scent that is not persistent on the hair, and it is white, translucent, and fairly dense in consistency. It is simple to apply to the hair, but it consumes a fair amount. As a result, it is not as economical as Tresemme conditioner, which requires at least twice as much to make finger combing easier.

This application method was appealing to me: liberally apply conditioner to hair and soak in a steaming bath for seven to ten minutes. Here, the curls become the very "seaweed" that proponents of "curly" hair care adore discussing. Hair is silky smooth and easy to comb through with your fingers. The strands are full, luscious, and crimpable.

Kinky-Curly Curling Custard natural styling gel

Split the hair into tiny strands and apply the custard gel to very wet hair if you have tight curls. Apply gel to every hair strand, blending it from the roots to the ends. Use a spray bottle to mist the strand if it starts to get dry. Large hair strands can be formed by applying the gel to damp hair for less noticeable curls.

Country of origin: USA.

Price / volume:

Both of the original packaging’s volumes are 8 ounces (about 236 ml) and 16 ounces (about 472 ml), with prices ranging from 1100 to 1900 RUR.

Composition:

Water, horsetail, chamomile, nettle, marshmallow, pectic, citric acid, potassium sorbate, organic aloe vera juice, and natural fragrance are combined in this botanical infusion.

When I first opened it, I wasn’t sure if this was a gel or not. It was obvious that the texture, color, and scent were more akin to custard than gel. I detect hints of nutmeg, cinnamon, and vanilla in the scent. In addition to remaining in the hair for at least 20 hours and providing a fresh scent upon each refresh, I am completely enamored with this scent.

In terms of consistency, the gel is soft, flexible, absolutely not sticky, you want to apply it again and again, because you can overdo it with it and get thin stuck-together strands after breaking the cast. Moreover, the strands are shiny and don"t look dirty, as they did with Angel gel or refreshing sprays. If you apply the gel in moderation, then there is a cast, it is soft, and easily breaks up overnight.

What did I get as a result of the Kinky-Curly care regimen?

I was happy with my hair’s condition after henna; it was incredibly soft after drying. This surprised me because I had expected to need an aloe gel or moisturizing mask after using henna to dye my curls because they had dried out and I had not received the same level of softness from Hydra. But the pictures disappointed me. I’m not sure if the products themselves, henna, or liquid ends are to blame for this.

Henna hair, almost dry, in a flash photo on the left. There is a cast; it is not broken. Henna hair, a cloudy morning photo taken without a flash, a broken cast, and no refresh are on the right.

I was much happier with the three Kinky products’ results on henna-basma hair the morning after a haircut.

There was a certain magic to it! That The Kinky-Curly three-step system "Shampoo – Conditioner – Gel" proved to be self-sufficient; with it, you can (and even need to!) skip the stages with the mask and leave-in — the hair already looks great. This could have been due to the haircut or the presence of basma in the hair.

Overcast skies and window light. One slide: the cast is intact. Slide 2: The cast breaks in a matter of minutes.

This is pure bliss—smooth, elastic, shiny, plump, structured, flexible curls that hold their shape even in humid weather!

The outcome is shown more clearly in the video.

This three-speed Kinky-Curly system reflects well in regular water and doesn’t require extra styling. Extra moisture, fixation, or proteinization are not necessary for hair. Even though I sleep on silk and wash my hair in pineapple, almost the entire cast crashed that night. hair following the caste’s dissolution Without any extra tools, the worst of this trio functions flawlessly. Bravo, bravo, and bravo once more!

My verdict:

I want full sizes of all three products!

DevaCurl

It’s likely that every girl with curly hair has heard of the American brand DevaCurl. This is not surprising, as Lorraine Massey, the company’s creator, developed the Curly Cirl Method, which proved to be a true gem (and for some even salvation) for many curly girls like me. Furthermore absent from these cosmetics are silicones, sulfates, and parabens. Olya Lela has written two posts* that go into greater detail about the brand.

in two posts*

  1. DevaCurl – cult cosmetics for curly. Let"s look at all possible ways of application, analyze the compositions and effect on hair!
  2. DevaCurl: intensive care and styling for curly hair

Since my hair cannot be classified as super curly (type 4) or wavy (type 2), I chose the Original line for curly hair (type 3).

Products from the Original line as an example

The items that comprise the "Cleansing – Mask – Conditioner – Styling" scheme were my selection. Let’s learn more about the products.

DevaCurl No-Poo Original Zero Lather Conditioning Cleanser

Country of origin: USA.

Price/volume:

Three volumes are available in the original packaging: approximately 80 ml, priced at 643 rubles; approximately 355 ml, priced at 1,415 rubles; and approximately 946 ml, priced at 2,830 rubles.

The manufacturer’s assurances: Our first and best-selling cleanser is No-Poo Zero Lather Conditioning Cleanser. With peppermint and grapeseed oils, this moisturizing, non-foaming formula stimulates and cleanses the scalp and hair without removing the natural oils that are essential for curls. You get gorgeous, bouncy, shiny curls after using No-Poo.

Ingredients:

Water (Aqua, Eau), Glycerin, Isopropyl Palmitate, Behentrimonium Chloride, Laureth-4, Propylene Glycol, Vitis Vinifera (Grape) Seed Oil, Mentha Piperita (Peppermint) Oil, Wheat Amino Acids, Melissa Officinalis Extract, Humulus Lupulus (Hops) Extract, Cymbopogon Schoenanthus Extract, Chamomilla Recutita (Matricaria) Extract, Rosmarinus Officinalis (Rosemary) Extract, Achillea Millefolium Extract, Cocamidopropyl Betaine, Menthol, Citric Acid, Polyquaternium-7, Diazolidinyl Urea, Iodopropynyl Butylcarbamate, Aroma (Scent).

Pleasant No-Poo Original consistency that isn’t dense or creamy. It is a uniform white color without the use of dyes, which is definitely a plus. The scent of a jar has hints of lemongrass, but as it gets on hair, it takes on the "aroma" of lemon-flavored pemolules. As a result, I constantly feel like I’m wearing cleaning powder on my head when I wash.

As with any coping, the product is moderately consumed. I needed only two washes with 30 ml of No-Poo Original. You feel compelled to reapply the conditioner due to its lack of foam, but I experienced the same issue with Yves Rocher’s soft cleansing cream. Still, No-Poo Original’s undeniable benefit is that it cleans your hair the first time around—just not so much that it squeaks. Following rinsing, the scalp has a pleasing sense of cleanliness and is fragrant with pemolux. Kovosh didn’t make me scratchy.

DevaCurl Deep Sea Repair Seaweed Strengthening Mask

Country of origin: USA.

Price/volume:

The two volumes in the original packaging are approximately 236 ml and 5,25 ml, respectively, priced at 2,316 and 4,117 rubles.

Promises made by the manufacturer: This ultra-restorative treatment guards against environmental influences and eliminates the harmful effects of heat damage and chemical treatments. Damaged hair is transformed and given texture again by the restorative formula. A combination of proteins from rice, wheat, and soy strengthens, lessens breakage and brittleness, and increases elasticity in hair. Seaweed repairs hair from heat or chemical damage. Sea lavender moisturizes and shields against environmental stress.

The mask smells delicately of subtle floral notes and has a creamy shade and thick, pleasant consistency. The mask covers each hair gently and applies easily over the curls.

I applied it to towel-dried hair just like any other mask. I covered my hair with a shower cap, topped it off with a heated hat, and applied the mask for ten to fifteen minutes. The hair is silky and smooth after the mask is removed, but it is too thick to comb through with your fingers, so you will need to apply more conditioner.

After using it for the first time, I discovered that this mask—like other restorative ones—is too thick for my fine, healthy hair. Without DevaCurl care, this mask was much more to my liking. However, if your hair is damaged and requires additional attention, this mask will assist in giving it back its luster and smoothness.

DevaCurl One Condition Original

This air conditioner borrowed the dense consistency of the Deep Sea Repair mask and the scent of pemolules with lemon from No-Poo Original. The only difference is the color—it’snowa uniform white that’s scattered rather than blended.

The air conditioner has a respectable flow rate, but it takes a lot of tools to easily comb hair. Maybe the air conditioner’s fairly thick consistency is the reason for this. Even with the detachler’s higher quality, the Tressemme air conditioner is still more cost-effective.

Two well-liked styling methods—Kinky-Curly and DevaCurl—stand out for their capacity to highlight and define curl patterns when it comes to embracing natural curls. Both techniques employ specific products to produce an effect known as "curl casting," which helps retain moisture and mold curls without making them crunchy or stiff. Your hair’s particular texture and personal preference will usually determine which of these two methods works best for you, but both can leave your curls looking hydrated, bouncy, and exquisitely defined.

DevaCurl Ultra Defining Gel

Country of origin: USA.

Price/volume:

The manufacturer promises that this styler will improve the shape and definition of your curls by enveloping them in a non-sticky, protective composition. A special mixture made with soy and wheat proteins holds moisture and adds luster.

Composition:

Hydrated Wheat Protein, Hydrolyzed Corn Protein, Hydrolyzed Soy Protein, VP/VA Copolymer, Glycerin, and Water (Aqua, Eau) Extracts from Melissa Officinalis, Humulus Lupulus (Hops), Cymbopogon Schoenanthus, Chamomilla Recutita (Matricaria), Rosmarinus Officinalis (Rosemary), Achillea Millefolium, Ethylhexylglycerin, Disodium EDTA, Polysorbate-20, Phenoxyethanol, Polyquaternium-7, Aminomethyl Propanol, Acrylates/C10-30 Alkyl Acrylate Crosspolymer, Fragrance (Parfum).

The gel is utterly clear, akin to a tear from a baby. Out of the four products, the scent is the most pleasant; the "sweet" notes are evident. When applied, the liquid gel tries to escape from the palm and is not at all sticky. I didn’t manage to overdo the gel, but it is difficult to tell where on wet hair there is already gel and where there isn’t because of the consistency. Although casta gel doesn’t give, its fixation is still very good.

What did I get as a result of the DevaCurl care regimen?

The curls following DevaCurl products are swollen, shiny, and curled; at least on the strands closest to the face, the curl is smaller than following any other product. This is also the case with the Kinky trio. The strands continue to feel like those same "seaweeds" even after popping. Aloe gel is not necessary for additional hydration because the hair does not appear dry after drying. Only the subtle scent of the gel is detected on the hair when it is refreshed with water.

I used all four products on my henno-basma hair before getting a haircut, and this is the outcome:

On the second day, under cloudy natural lighting, refreshing with water:

On the other hand, I preferred the outcome more after using the Deep Sea mask in subsequent applications. This mask did not give the hair its usual lightness; instead, it proved to be too heavy for my curls.

The products had a unique sheen when applied to short hair. The No-Poo Original, One Condition Original, and Ultra Defining Gel product scheme was my favorite. In this instance, I have elastic, full, and soft curls that you will love forever:

There are just three DevaCurl products—no flash or window light.

The outcome is much better in the video.

Since I was low on hairspray, I opted to see how the brand’s other products interacted with other scalp cleansers. The conditioner and gel from DevaCurl and I have become friends with the sulfate-free shampoo.

Herbal root mask without sulfates Devacurl gel, Devacurl conditioner, and Jasmine Lime shampoo. One slide: flash, drying right away. 2 slide, without flash, in the morning following a refresh.

My verdict:

I want full sizes of 3 products from the brand: No-Poo Original, One Condition Original and Ultra Defining Gel.
