Giovanni is an American mass-market brand that emphasizes naturalness and ecology and describes itself as "salon inspired." My jars are full of promises about saving the environment, so it appears that this happens frequently with silicone-free lines.

Giovanni is not available for purchase in Russia, but it is simple to order online, and even then the costs are fairly affordable.

The list of products Giovanni is very long: there are about ten conditioners alone and, by the way, unlike the conditioners of the previous patient Love Beauty and Planer, they differ in composition not only in fragrances. Many of them are suitable for CGM, so it was not easy to choose. I settled on the most popular in the Russian-speaking curly community pairs from the Eco Chic Hair Care series – Smooth As Silk and Tea Trea Triple Treat (they are kidding). I gave the Tea Tree to my grandmother, but I already ordered the silk ones in a double set and they went to me. I also took a gel and a liva of these lines, but I will write a separate post about them on occasion (and so whole novels come out). For those who want, there are masks and dry shampoos, as well as a dozen more lines with full lines, so you can try their products for years.

I simply discovered a compelling angle; these products have nothing to do with pine.

Packaging

I like the light rectangular jars with rounded corners. If they had fewer letters on them, the design would be perfect. The flat lid allows you to store them upside down, although not very securely. Initially, all the products came to me sealed in a thin film, so you don"t have to worry about someone sniffing them. And they also didn"t spread all over the parcel.
Apparently, to avoid confusion, the shampoos are poured into opaque ivory-colored bottles, and the balms are in snow-white and slightly transparent ones.
The lid opens easily, I don"t scrape my fingers on it. The hole is small and the density of the product is very well thought out, it is easy to control how much of it flows out.
The bottle does not leak when closed upside down, thanks to the plug on the lid.

I really did try to make sense of what was said, but English has the strangest transitions. Suppose the palette is written as follows.

Composition

Aqua (purified water), sodium lauroyl sarcosinate, cocamidopropyl betaine, sodium cocoamphoacetate, lauryl glucoside, decyl glucoside, sodium cocoyl glutamate, sodium lauryl glucose carboxylate, glycerin, pyrus malus (apple) fruit extract, *aloe barbadensis (aloe vera) leaf juice , *chamomilla recutita (matricaria) leaf extract, *citrus aurantium dulcis (valencia orange) extract, *citrus grandis (grapefruit) fruit extract, *cymbopogon schoenanthus (lemongrass) extract, *echinacea purpurea extract, *glycine soja (soybean) seed extract , *lavandula angustifolia (lavender) extract, *rosmarinus officinalis (rosemary) leaf extract, *macrocystis pyrifera (sea kelp) extract, *mangifera indica (mango) extract, *salix alba (willow bark) extract, xanthan gum, glycol distearate, panthenol (pro-vitamin B5), citric acid, polysorbate 20, natural fragrance, potassium sorbate, phenoxyethanol.

I was perplexed by the composition for a long time because surfactants were used, which I had never heard of or seen in shampoos before. However, I was able to locate nearly every participant in a surfactants-related Beauty Brains podcast episode.

1. Sodium lauroyl sarcosinate — a mild surfactant with weak foam, works mainly in soft water.
2. Cocamidopropyl betaine — a medium-strength surfactant, thickening and giving a lush foam. Softens the effect of other surfactants, which is why it is often used in tandem with SLES.
3. Sodium cocoamphoacetate — a mild “premium” surfactant with noticeable foam, also has light conditioning properties. Doesn’t even sting the eyes.
4. Lauryl glucoside, Decyl glucoside — glucosides, mild and “premium” surfactants, non-ionic.
5. Sodium cocoyl glutamate — a medium-strength surfactant, similar to betaine, softens other surfactants.
6. Sodium lauryl Glucose carboxylate — emulsifier, mild cleaner.

And we have a set of as many as 7 substances, of which the most active is, it seems, Cocamidopropyl betaine, and firstly, it is of medium strength in itself, and secondly, it softens the effect of other surfactants. In general, a very soft shampoo. Glycerin is located quite high, but in rinse-off products it is needed more as a solvent. The rest of the shampoo is responsible for texture, preservation, pH level and marketing. However, for me, the composition of the assets is already quite impressive.
Oh, and it is also pearlescent, thanks to glycol distearate for this. How many times have I written "soft"?

NB: Looking ahead, the composition justified the effect, so I was puzzled for the future about which shampoos from the Giovanni line would suit me. There are as many as 6 shampoos in the "white" line (one blue), and all in general are complex, soft, sulfate-free. Smooth As Silk, apparently, is also medium in strength. Tea Tree Triple Treat seems to be even softer in composition, the rest are similar to Smooth As Silk. I was most interested in Root 66, promising volume. Firstly, there are acrylates, which are supposedly for volume, and secondly, it is on isethionates and the composition of the surfactants there is shorter, so it should wash better.

Impressions

The shampoo is opaque, white-pearlescent, and thick enough to keep it from leaking out of your hands while still being sufficiently liquid to easily flow out of a tiny hole.

It smells strongly and pleasantly of citrus, like orange, both straight out of the can and after washing, but the scent does not cling to the hair. It foams reasonably well. Here’s an illustration in a cup.

Even on the hair, it produces visible foam the first time, and then foams like in cartoons the second time.

Correspondingly, first and second soaping.

I nearly tripped over the foam in the shampoo a few times while taking a shower. It even appears to help detangle hair while washing, at least after Giovanni Smooth as Silk balm and conditioner combination, which made combing much easier than when using the conditioner with another shampoo. This pair’s hair appears incredibly soft.

Everything is fine, to put it briefly, but this shampoo doesn’t wash my hair. Although we typically associate foam fluffiness and rinsing ability with thick, fine, and low foam, spectacular bubbles and fluffiness can also be imparted by foaming agents. This appears to be one such instance: Giovanni Smooth as Silk has a very low actual washing ability, even though it foams, lathers, and displays its shampooiness with great intensity.

My scalp is neither dry nor oily. It gets dirty slowly, but requires thorough washing. A very typical story for low-porosity long-haired curls, as far as I understand. Most often, I prefer soft sulfate shampoos, but because of the damaged ends, I experiment with sulfate-free ones. In general, I have already encountered the fact that hair after sulfate-free ones does not become directly clean to the touch, and this is normal, they say, we do not wash off excess, leaving a protective layer on the scalp. This is not a minus in itself. I washed my hair with pink Love Beauty and Planet for a couple of months without any consequences, although it left this feeling of incomplete cleanliness. But with Giovanni this did not happen. Some time after the start of use, the head began to feel dirty and itchy already on the second day, and small pimples appeared in the root zone on the forehead. It is interesting that even if you use Smooth as Silk shampoo in the second lathering after the sulfate shampoo (regular Nivea for men), some residue remains on the hair and roots.

My husband, who has straight hair, used it simultaneously with me. He really ought to wash his oily scalp at least every other day, but he is too indolent, so I’m still searching for a shampoo that will keep it fresh. Even mine on SLES "ripped everything off his hair," but he’s already grown accustomed to softer shampoos. However, after washing his head in the evening, the next morning, he was filthy from Smooth as Silk.

The Smooth As Silk shampoo and conditioner, Nook fluid, and natural drying are shown in the above photo. As you can imagine, I can’t even attempt to style my hair without conditioner because of how little conditioning the shampoo provided.

Still, the shampoo is incredibly gentle. It was so noticeable that I thought it must be contaminated, but the composition contains no oils or film-forming agents other than a few surfactants that have a conditioning effect. It didn’t work for me, but if you’re looking for something softer for regular washing, give it a try. This is true even though we mostly tested the shampoo in soft water, which is where it should open up.

I want to get Root 66 out of curiosity and I’ll reapply Tea Tree Triple Treat for my curly-haired grandma (a rare shampoo that doesn’t trigger her allergies with its scent). However, there’s a chance that the shampoos in this Giovanni series aren’t suitable for me at all.

Giovanni Smooth As Silk Conditioner

Promises

Silk. It has an amazing texture and feels amazing. You feel attractive, seductive, and desirable as a result. Silky as silk Your hair becomes incredibly smooth, silky, and wonderfully untangled when you use Deeper Moisture Conditioner. This moisturizing conditioner revitalizes and preps hair for your individual style by creating a silky-smooth palette. The smoothest and most streamlined movements are indeed offered by Smooth As Silk.

Once more, there’s something off about the palette and style. I believe I actually understand English. but you understand the general idea.

Ingredients

Hydrolyzed soy protein, natural fragrance, phenoxyethanol, ethylhexylglycerin, cetyl alcohol, stearyl alcohol, glycerin, and aqua (purified water) * chamomilla recutita (matricaria) leaf extract; * citrus aurantium dulcis (valencia orange) extract; * citrus grandis (grapefruit) fruit extract; *cymbopogon schoenanthus (lemongrass) extract; *echinacea purpurea extract; *glycine soja (soybean) seed extract; *lavandula angustifolia (lavender) extract; *rosmarinus officinalis (rosemary) leaf extract; *macrocystis pyrifera (sea kelp) extract; *mangifera indica (mango) extract; *salix alba (willow bark) extract; *cetrimonium bromide.

Excluding the extracts in trace amounts, this is a very short composition. Water, fatty alcohols in two forms. Glycerin is more for texture, since again it is a rinse-off product, and glycerin interacts well with water and, therefore, is easily rinsed off. And then immediately phenoxyethanol, that is, a preservative, and a flavoring agent. Plus, soy proteins are present. I was especially interested in cetrimonium bromide. In addition to it, the composition does not contain cationic emulsifiers that could facilitate the sticking of alcohols, and this one is at the very end and the Internet says that it is used as an antistatic. As far as I understand, such products without cations need to be kept on the hair for at least 10 minutes. The packaging recommends massaging the balm into the hair.
It is interesting that there are no oils in the composition at all. I expect a product that does not weigh down, detangles well, and has no special effects after.

Impressions

Although the balm pours readily from the bottle, it must still be shaken or kept inverted for storage. To ensure that the balm rolls in the proper direction, it is typically sufficient to shake it once.

It smells slightly of citrus cream and is snow-white in color. It is not absorbed and spreads easily through the hair, leaving a feeling behind.

It doesn’t run away very far.

Step 1: assess your hair’s condition. I’ve been able to take nice walks, fly on an aircraft, and style my hair twice using foam and protein spray since my last hair wash. Even with the "protective hairstyle," which is essentially my hair in a bun and braid under the hood, they have already begun to take on the appearance of wavy dreadlocks.

Step 2: Give yourself a hair wash I haven’t tried Giovanni shampoo at all, especially since I moved to a city with more heavily mineralized water. Shauma Energy of Nature was graciously left here by the landlord. It smells like SLS with cocamidopropyl betaine and stupid apples, which is what I like. This pair is nice as well; they usually feel comfortable on my scalp. I give my hair two washes. My hair is quite tangled, with a few tiny tangles here and there, but it’s not quite matted.

Step three: air purifier I apply a few tablespoons of conditioner (which is a small amount for my length; typically, twice as much is needed) and work it through my hair, paying particular attention to the ends. I use my hands to sort it out, carefully (and successfully) untangling the mess. My hair feels slick to the touch and is not too difficult to detangle. I wriggle. Although the conditioner foams on my hair, I feel that this will even improve its distribution.

Step 4: Flushing (not) The water in the boiler ran out while I was washing my hair twice, so I had to rinse the conditioner with cold water for seven or eight seconds, wring out my hair, wrap it in a terry towel, and let it air dry. This is the ideal day to test the leave-in method. The hair remains matted.

NB: KGM demonizes terry towels quite a bit, their fault being that they pull water out of hair very quickly, unlike alternatives like a smooth microfiber towel, which allows you to gently squeeze out your hair. Indeed, drying too quickly and unevenly can ruin the shape of your curls and make them fluffy. And a terry towel will “eat” some of the styling, so I don’t use it for styling and microplopping.

But on those days when you just need to wash your hair, it’s quite good. I don’t think it can ruin your hair by “pulling moisture from the depths”. Right now, my hair along the main length was still wet, hello low porosity.

Step 5: a fluid You don’t have to be concerned about your hair breaking into tiny strands when you don’t style it, so I towel-dry my hair and comb it through without letting any water drip out. Even with the unwashed conditioner, the ends still resist, so I give them a single pump of Nook fluid. In the salon, styling was typically done without rinsing out the conditioner and cream on the ends.

Step 6: sifting Though the hair feels slightly soapy to the touch, combing it perpendicular to the head now requires less swearing than it did a few years ago. A common issue is depicted in the second picture: my hand is missing. Why do I act in this way? for a more organic curl pattern and volume at the roots. Though there is typically no volume, styling upside down doesn’t really bother me for my length (on medium hair, it can stick to the back of the head and form an odd shape).

Drying is step seven. It stands out a little even when wet and promises volume. The hair broke into small strands after being thoroughly wrung out and dried. I will have waves and a wildly messy hairstyle on the third day if I pour styling product on them now. However, I need to rinse my hair at least because I’m heading to the thermal baths tomorrow and I don’t want to drag styling product into public pools, which is why I used a towel. I then carefully replace them in the towel and cover my pillow with my hair before going to bed.

The outcome in the morning I’m in the corner now. In fact, using so much conditioner caused me to get a tiny cast, but my hair didn’t get any heavier. voluminous and soft.

In short, this is a good and neutral conditioner that quickly detangles hair without weighing it down. It doesn’t cause discomfort if you don’t rinse it off, but keeps the hair soft. But it’s still just a conditioner, without masks and leave-in products it can’t handle bleached ends on its own. Overall, it seems to me that it will be good for healthy porous or low-porosity hair, and that’s probably why it’s loved by the curly community. Perhaps, I’ll repeat: I need to refresh my memory of Tresemme and try styling my hair with it without rinsing.
My husband was indifferent to the conditioner. Yes, hair slippery, but does not make combing easier. Moisturizing conditioner Angel Expert, a supply of which has been here since last year, he liked it more. Of course, dimethicone is in third place, his favorite formula.
