Although growing out a short haircut can seem like a difficult task, it is undoubtedly achievable with perseverance and some attention. I had no idea how the process would work when I made the decision to grow my short haircut into something longer. Even though I knew it wouldn’t happen right away, I still wanted to see how far I could go in a year.
I learned what works and what doesn’t during this time. I gained a lot of knowledge about hair care, from managing strange lengths to selecting the best products. Although it wasn’t always simple, the results eventually became apparent with the correct routine.
I’ll go over the procedures I followed, the supplies I used, and the things I discovered along the road in this post. This might make the process of growing out your short hairstyle easier and faster for you if you’re considering doing so.

The history of my hair in 2025
January
I changed my appearance to start the New Year by dying it purple. In order for you to see the results of our collaborative efforts in the photos, I taught my partner how to apply compositions and bleach his hair.
Natural hue: roughly a level 6. I had 3% oxide and Londa powder in my arsenal. The powder doesn’t cause dust, lightens hair effectively and gently, and doesn’t irritate the scalp.
We used Unitones, a direct-action pigment, for toning. Although the dye is not very well-known, colorists and enthusiasts of home dyeing should take note of it. Its gel base allows for economical consumption and effortless application to the hair. More information about it can be found in my post "In Search of the Perfect Purple."
The color purple was too dark; I had hoped for a lighter shade. I failed to consider my erratic behavior and did not use conditioner to dilute the pigment in vain. Let’s draw attention to the first error:
February
The color washed out, but not enough. I did not want to wait, so before the new coloring I lightened my hair with “American shampoo”. This technique is used to wash off the color a little more carefully than to bleach it again with powder.
There’s a good chance that any pigmented color in your hair that you remove with bleaching powder will just fall out and stay on you forever.
We chose to use gradients to create a more intricate coloring. The spring marathon’s starting post displayed the outcome. I achieved the same pigmentation by diluting three colors—pink, purple, and dark purple—with conditioner. The outcome was stunning, with overflows, complex hues, and seamless transitions. The length of the hair did not pose any issues because it was easy to style and the temples did not significantly grow.
It makes sense to wear growth masks that function by warming up during the winter. The pepper mask from Compliment was my choice. Using it on damp, clean hair, I left it on for forty minutes before washing it off. As a consequence of the growth stimulation in the March photo, I was able to significantly accelerate my hair growth.
March
Bleaching of the roots was not done in March. I can’t quite recall how it related to anything. All we did was apply the February coloring again on top of the organic roots. Later on, we experienced the repercussions.
The mature temples had lost their submissiveness. I was able to transition to the Curly Girl Method because of the length, so I added Taft "Invisible Fixation" gel and temporarily stopped using silicone-containing products. The hair took these changes well and I was happy with the curls.
April
Three months into having colored hair, I was missing my blonde. A vision of a long-haired, blond virgin emerged in thoughts. The thought of going blonde struck a chord with me.
In order to get rid of as much of the color as possible, the hair had to be lightened again. I made a traditional powder and oxide 1: 2 mixture for the roots and a more diluted option (1: 4) for the length. Pink color, which was the end result of mistakes No. 1 and No. 2, finally failed in the hair due to discoloration.
I chose to get rid of the issue by giving my hair a peach-colored tint. This was made possible by the base. I used Manic Panic, which I’ve had since I had orange hair and was shaded Psyedelic Sunset, to create the color by combining it with a Fuchsia Concept dye. The final mixture was applied to the hair after being significantly diluted with air conditioning.
The color was initially bright red, but it quickly became the required peach after the first washing.
May
The peach color faded fast. In order to create a gradient for the new coloring, we used new dye from a Russian manufacturer called BadGirl in the shades Sugar Baby (a soft pink) and "Tonica" in turquoise. I used conditioner to dilute every direct action pigment.
My hair appeared blue-violet from the diluted turquoise dye, but the soft pink was anything but soft. In spite of this, the coloring came out beautifully. The blue quickly faded, leaving tips of light pink behind.
I started taking tinctures of peppermint to promote hair growth. I used a syringe without a needle to apply the product to the roots and gave it a good massage. I did not dilute it. I continued to use this stimulation technique into the fall after the summer.
June
I had the most brilliant idea in June to dye my hair a soft pink color, tone it ash blonde, and bleach the regrown roots. We used IroIro in the shade Bubble Gum Pink Pastel for the pink toning, and Londa 10/16 was used to dye the roots.
In contrast to the previous pink dye, the IroIro dye actually had a pastel appearance. Apart from this, though, it pleased with great hair care and durability.
July
I decided not to bleach my hair in July because I was heading to the beach. The direct-acting pink pigment was actively washed away by salt water. I used restorative masks more frequently in my hair care regimen so that my hair wouldn’t stay "naked." My hair was already long enough to wear in a ponytail, a bun, and two pigtail braids. I put on a hat and tied a bandana to protect myself from the sun.
August
When error #3 was made again in August, a dark yellow stripe appeared. In an attempt to salvage the situation, I colored the length with Manic Panic’s pink, which I went into great detail about here, and applied diluted purple to the roots. The purple hue faded from the roots after a few washings, revealing a stunning ash hue.
September
Compared to other pink dyes, Manic Panic faded more quickly, leaving just a faint hint behind. I was able to dye my hair a cooler color thanks to the base. We created a cocktail using the following Londa colors for this: 10/16, 10/65, and 8/81. The color came out perfectly, a witcher’s gray.
But the ash hue soon disappeared, leaving the hair beige. Using diluted direct-action pigments, I was able to adjust the shade. I simply filled a container with water, added a few grams of dye, mixed it well, and then dipped my head in it. The final color was silvery.
October
I bravely decided to use a special blond with 12% oxide instead of powder to lighten my hair. I was concerned that the orange stripe would stay because my natural hair is fairly dark, but the interest was stronger than I had anticipated. I used Londa’s 12/81 paint for the first lightning.
The color came out incredibly gorgeous, a natural light blond. It was easy to see the difference between my lightened and bleached hair, but I chose not to tone it.
I started to lose my hair. Initially, I attributed everything to my frequent use of antibiotics, but I eventually understood that the hair simply falls off rather than out. Maybe the hair couldn’t handle the 12% oxide effect because the dye got on the stressed area, or maybe the toning wasn’t done correctly. The misunderstanding on the head was successfully hidden by the curls. By the way, the loss may also have resulted from the Curly Girls Method’s frequent squeezing. Right now, all we can do is speculate.
November
The hair loss on top of the head stopped in November, with up to half of the hair falling out. It is not as apparent in the mass, but the density is unquestionably insufficient. We’ll keep expanding.
We made the decision to test Tefia’s softer special blond in November. The color selection was 12/10 (ash). The paint is really easy to apply, lightens hair gently, and doesn’t dry out the scalp or hair, which is why I really enjoyed it in use.
We toned the hair using Tefia 10/21 "Vanilla" toning paint to create a more seamless color transition. The color didn’t appeal to me; it was rather sand-colored and dark.
December
We decided to lighten the roots in December using Tefia’s 11/7 and 11/1 shades. I stumbled upon a brand technologist’s comment, stating that Row 11 has a higher lightning capacity than Row 12. I did not observe any appreciable variations in the outcome, though.
I experimented with toning with diluted direct-action pigments in gray, pink, and purple. I still need to get the hang of this toning technique because my hair is currently purple where the pigment has sunken. The purple undertone fades with time, but I would prefer to stop it from happening.
The temples grew to 22 centimeters, which allowed me to even out the length of the hair. I hesitated for a long time, I thought about going for a "second try" and not cutting my hair for another year. But my hair has grown very well, so a haircut will not throw me back too much. In addition, the blonde, repeatedly bleached with powder, will still have to be cut off. At the hairdresser, I got a straight bob without lengthening or thinning, they cut the ends of the broken hair a little so that they wouldn’t stick out. I was very pleased with the result.
My hair care
I didn’t go into detail about my monthly care because it was straightforward. I used Meela Meelo solid shampoo for the first six months, but after that I realized the blonde needed a softer wash. Tefia has released two new shampoos: one for thin hair and one with hyaluronic acid. Funds should be used to gently and carefully cleanse the scalp without drying out the hair. Even my fingers can pass through them!
Pilling Organic Kitchen was what I used to thoroughly cleanse my scalp. I’m still not sure if this had any effect at all. Just as it was prior to employing Pilling DSD. Maybe you should use peeling to cleanse the skin more frequently in order to monitor the results.
Every wash, I wear a mask. Using KAARAL HYDRA masks, I concentrated on moisturizing for the first six months. It’s not quite the right strategy because too much moisture can damage hair just as much as not enough. The Londa Visible Repair mask was the cause of the hair restoration; it revitalized the hair and increased its elasticity and reduced porosity. Filler, Ultra, and Royal Jelly masks from Karaal made an appearance in my hair care regimen in the fall.
While Filler and Ultra worked wonders, the latter did a terrible job of maintaining bleached hair. Ultra was even effective as a stand-in. I also included an Ice Curly silicone-free restoration mask in my hair care regimen, which I discussed in-depth here. When I was taking care of my hair with the "Curly Girls Method," the mask was a perfect fit for my regimen.
Only Kaaral Reale, the conditioner, effectively reduced frizz following the Hydra mask. Additionally, there was an unforeseen item available for 243 rubles in a 1-liter capacity: Kallos Vegan Soul. I use the product as a balm, even though the manufacturer refers to it as a mask. The product includes proteins, oils, and extracts; it does not contain silicone.
When my hair turned into algae after applying the mask, I was taken aback. Furthermore, Kallos works well for thinning out direct action pigments. I recently found that it makes a great moisturizing spray when combined with water and poured into a spray bottle.
Only Londa Velvet Oil is left in my care among the leave-in products. I use it frequently because it perfectly smooths my hair without making it heavy. I always apply Ultra mask as a cream, or I leave some of the balm on my hair.
Restructure ampoules are one of the special products that deserves special attention, but I have already covered them in great detail. My hair requires more nourishment and repair than it does moisture, so I haven’t been using them as much as I used to.
In a year, growing out a short haircut requires perseverance and the appropriate strategy. Over time, one can attain a longer, fuller style by using nourishing products to support healthy growth, maintaining regular trims to shape the hair, and restraining oneself from making drastic changes. Although the path may present some difficulties, the outcomes can be fruitful if one is committed and careful.
Tips and conclusions
- Why I focus on growing out short haircuts? Such a length is capricious and without regular haircuts and adjustments, sometimes you want to give up growing out and update the shape. Therefore, an important and key point in growing is patience and acceptance of your hair in any form.
- If you, like me, cut your hair short and then decided to grow it, then first decide on strategy. Perhaps it is more practical for you get regular haircuts, To grow hair evenly, the form has always been preserved. If you can close your eyes to sticking hair, then just Leave your hair alone And you will notice how quickly they will grow.
- Short hair, especially bleached and discolored, also requires care, like longer hair. However, you should not apply the product to the scalp, this can clog the bulbs, cause itching and hair loss.
- You can tame your hair with invisible hairpins, as well as gel for styling. I do not recommend using hairspray on a regular basis, because the alcohol in the composition can dry out the hair.
- In total, the hair grew by 22 centimeters – this is about 1.8 cm per month. My standard height is 1.5 cm, and therefore products for accelerating hair growth work, but do not underestimate the influence of more important factors: your health, both physical and mental, the level of stress in life, rest and sleep, maintaining vitamin levels. For example, at the end of the year I found out that I have a severe deficiency of vitamin D (and this is provided that I take it all year), as well as iron. Of course, this affects hair growth, so I will replenish the deficiencies.
- The mistakes I indicated may seem trivial, but, as you can see, even an experienced hair maniac can make them. It is worthwhile to be attentive to the needs of your hair so that their quality only improves.
I learned a lot about patience and hair care from growing out a short haircut in just a single year. Even though it wasn’t always simple, maintaining a regular schedule had a significant impact. My hair grew healthy as it grew because I gave it regular trims, nourishing treatments, and refrained from using too much heat styling.
Along the way, I tried out a few different styles as well. Making the most of every stage of the process meant that it was enjoyable. Rather than waiting to see the finished product, I discovered ways to work with the length of my hair, from adorable bobs to mid-length looks.
In retrospect, I’m pleased with the growth I achieved in a single year. I’m happy that I finally have the longer hair I’ve always desired, even though the journey to get here wasn’t easy.
