Proper hair washing
Yes, this was the first rule that had a significant impact on my hair. Even though this is a fundamental foundation, not everyone is proficient in it, so it won’t hurt to be reminded. I’ll split this point into two parts:
Wash your head, not your hair
I continue to observe how some girls wash their hair from root to tip with a thick layer of soap. This is not something you ought to do. And let’s investigate why.
A certain amount of sebum (sebum) is secreted by our scalp every second, which hydrates and shields the hair and scalp from outside factors. We eventually come to the realization that the roots no longer appear clean and fresh and that too much of this fat has accumulated. We next proceed to wash our hair. The sebum film that protects the roots is removed during washing, leaving them looking clean and fresh. We only wash off fat, and cleansers don’t have time to dry out our roots because sebum acts as a barrier between surfactants and the hair itself, preventing any damage to the hair from the roots.
What about the ends, too? Sebum does not have enough time to get to the ends of your hair between washes, leaving them exposed all the time. Furthermore, there is no barrier separating the hair from strong cleansing agents when we attempt to lather the entire length of the hair thoroughly; as a result, the surfactants are forced to cleanse the hair until it becomes rigid and dry.
However, the length must also be cleaned! Yes, but the length really requires how much of the cleansing foam runs through the hair when it’s being rinsed out. Additionally, there are Deep Cleansing Shampoos (DCS) that are used as needed (once every 1-2 months) and applied to the entire length of the hair to rid it of the excess load of accumulated care for a more thorough cleansing (for example, accumulated silicones, styling, and other products).
Squeeze, do not twist
I was taken aback upon discovering this regulation. It took me two weeks to get used to it after I decided to test it on myself because it was SO inconvenient for me to change. However, I could actually see the difference in these two weeks—my hair stopped breaking as much and became smoother.
How should one proceed? You cannot squeeze your hair dry like a rag after washing it. This damages it, which leads to its breaking. Rather, use even, straight motions to gently run your hands through your hair, smoothing it and removing any extra moisture.
You don"t need a towel anymore
I learned this rule later, but the result became noticeable faster. The fact is that a regular towel is designed to quickly and effectively absorb ALL moisture. At the same time, "ALL" does not mean "EXTRA". A regular towel is ready to quickly absorb not only excess, but also necessary moisture, so after you wrap your hair in a towel, you can see how the ends of the hair have dried almost completely, and the roots are still wet. It is logical to imagine that if you start drying your hair with a hairdryer, the ends will dry out even more. Which will again lead to brittleness, split ends, dehydration and stiffness.
What needs to be changed? A cotton T-shirt or a microfiber towel. These two men retain the moisture required for hair because they do not have such hard villi and only absorb extra water.
What is better – microfiber or cotton t-shirt
Here’s what I want to say after using a microfiber towel for almost a year and occasionally switching it out for a T-shirt. There is not a single difference in the hair’s quality. The hair is left wetter after using a microfiber towel because it absorbs less moisture than a T-shirt. The towel also features two layers of fabric and an entirely dry exterior.
T-shirts absorb extra moisture as well, and hair dries faster than cotton (like after a regular towel). I believe a microfiber towel would still be preferable for extremely damaged hair, but it won’t make a difference for hair in a non-critical state.
